Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition， the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later， and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still， with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come， there is much to enjoy in the work， including its warmth， youthful sincerity， and lyrical expression， so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia， either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5， 1882， with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4， 1890， with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz W?lner. Following an education at the Paris Conservatoire， which he entered at the age of twelve， he began life as a touring soloist while still a teenager. Taking popular operas and creating potpourris from their tunes was standard for a virtuoso such as Sarasate. Despite the failure of Georges Bizet’s (1838-1875) opera Carmen at its 1875 premiere， it began its conquest of the opera world soon after Bizet’s death. By the 1880s， the opera was extremely famous and successful， prompting Sarasate to add it to the list of other famous operas that he chose to craft into concert fantasies. He completed the orchestra version in 1881， premiering it in Madrid with the Sociedad de Concertos de Madrid， Mariano V疽quez conducting， on April 17 of that year. He produced a version with piano accompaniment a year later in 1882. Effectively in five movements (a prelude plus four movements) without pause， the work includes the following tunes from the opera: the Aragonaise (Entr’acte from Act Four)， Habanera (Act One)， an interlude (based on Carmen’s mocking treatment of Zuniga in Act One)， the S馮uidilla (aria from Act One)， and the Bohemian\/Gypsy Dance (Act Two). Upholding the dignity of the original opera from which it is derived， Carmen Fantasy (officially titled Concert Fantasy on themes from Bizet’s Carmen， Op. 25) remains one of Sarasate’s most popular operatic fantasies. The program also included， at Joachim’s insistence， Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major， Op. 61， on which Brahms modeled his own concerto. While the critical reception of the time was mixed， the audiences at the various early performances received the work well. Most complaints directed at the concerto addressed the role of the solo violin， noting that the soloist does not offer much of the melodic material or include much in the way virtuosic passages， a consequence of looking more towards Beethoven’s serious aesthetic rather than Paganini’s flashy one. Joachim himself， before a falling out with the composer over personal reasons， included Brahms’ concerto among the best German offered， saying: ”The Germans have four violin concertos.
